Son Heung-min could ‘earn new Tottenham contract under one condition’

Son Heung-min could yet see his stay with Tottenham extended beyond 2026.

After months of speculation about Son’s contractual situation in North London, which saw claims emerge that the 32-year-old was unhappy, Tottenham finally announced via the club’s official website (7 January) that they had taken up their option to extend their captain’s contract by one year, keeping him at the club until 2026.

Despite this, it has been suggested that Son could still leave Spurs, even for as little as £10million, with the reaction to his contract extension rather peculiar.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes the South Korean could be offered fresh terms if he can rediscover his best form.

“Son’s future at the club will depend on his form,” Wenham said.

“If he can get back to his best, then obviously they would offer him a new contract. However, he is getting older now, and his existing terms see him earn £200,000 per week. Therefore, that is a big deal for someone his age.

“As a result, if his form continues as it is, I expect this to be his last contract with Spurs. I just haven’t seen enough from him this season to suggest he will turn his form around and earn a new contract.”

Son Heung-min to earn brand new contract at Tottenham?

Son is a modern-day Spurs legend, without a doubt. However, it seems as though a lot of fans thought the decision to extend his contract wasn’t the correct one, and that it is time for the forward to move on, with suggestions even being made that he has recommended his own replacement.

Therefore, Wenham’s claim that Son could yet earn a new deal which would take his stay with Tottenham beyond 2026 might not be well received.

However, Son will only be offered a new deal should he find his best form again. As a result, unless something changes between now and the end of the season, it seems unlikely that Son will be handed another contract with Spurs.
