Ryan Sessegnon faces biggest season of his career amid Tottenham contract news

Ryan Sessegnon will be facing the biggest season of his Tottenham career next term as he enters the final year of his contract, Paul Robinson has said.

The luckless versatile left-sided ace sustained a fresh muscle injury playing for the Under-21s on 17 February (The Independent, 29 February) having only returned to action at the start of the year.

Sessegnon consequently underwent his second surgery in 12 months and it remains to be seen how much action he will miss this time around.

Having managed only 57 appearances since joining from Fulham in a reported £25million deal in August 2019 (BBC Sport), Robinson thinks Sessegnon has to view his latest setback as an opportunity in the coming months.

“I think Ryan Sessegnon’s been very unlucky. I think there’s a quality player in there who just can’t really string any type of game time together or stay fit month-on-month,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He’s been really unlucky to get injured again. His contract’s up in 2025 but I think there’s an opportunity now to concentrate on himself, and get himself 100 per cent fit, I’m not privy to the information about his injury or how long he’s going to be out for.

“I think if his contract’s up in 2025, next season, I think it’s going to be a huge preseason for him, it’s vitally important he gets a good preseason. We all talk about a good preseason, and that’s not just when the team meets back on the first day, working hard and getting game time and getting fit.

“That’s working hard as soon as this season finishes. Basically, roll this season into next season, he’s missed that much football and had that many injuries so it’s for his own body and conditions.

“It’s going to be a really important year for him, this preseason will be vital for him, Looking at the type of player and person he is, the attitude for hard work he’s not afraid of that and he’ll really want to get himself right and I think it’s important he gets himself right for next season.

“Whether he gets his opportunity at Tottenham we don’t know how that will go for him. But he has an opportunity to get himself right for the start of next season, which is probably going to be the biggest of his career so far.”

Will Tottenham sell Ryan Sessegnon in the summer transfer window?

There is no doubt that there is a serious talent in there with Sessegnon, it’s just such a huge shame that injuries have plagued his time in North London.

But Spurs have a big decision to make with the 23-year-old now. Do they keep him in the hope he can get fit and realise his potential? Or do they try and cash in during the summer?

Moreover, will there be any suitors for him given his lack of game time? It’s all one big conundrum for Spurs to manage.

Hopefully, for the player’s sake, he can get fit and play regularly again – whether that be with Tottenham or at a new venture.
