Rodrigo Bentancur ‘to move on from Tottenham’ as transfer news emerges

Rodrigo Bentancur’s near four-and-a-half-year stay with Tottenham is expected to come to an end this summer.

Regardless of whether Spurs win the UEFA Europa League, it looks set to be a summer of change in North London, with Ange Postecoglou expected to leave Tottenham.

However, the Australian might not be the only person headed for the exit door at Hotspur Way, with the future of several players also uncertain.

Perhaps the most likely player to leave Tottenham is Cristian Romero, who is widely reported to be of significant interest to Atletico Madrid.

However, Romero might not be the only Tottenham player heading to Spain this summer.

Atletico Madrid want to sign Bentancur from Tottenham

As well as Romero, Atletico are also keen to sign Bentancur, with ex-Spurs scout Bryan King suggesting Tottenham will demand £35million for the Uruguay international’s signature.

There had been speculation around a new contract for Bentancur in North London, with King suggesting that Tottenham might offer the 27-year-old £150,000-a-week to put pen to paper at Hotspur Way.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes this is the right time for Bentancur to be sold.

“Atletico are interested in Romero and Bentancur,” Wenham said.

“It would be a good move for both players. From Spurs’ point of view, they would obviously rather sell Bentancur than Romero, in terms of ability and contractual situation.

“Bentancur will only have a year left on his deal this summer, and he has had multiple issues this season, such as suspensions and injuries. Therefore, I feel this is the perfect time for a clean break.

“I think Bentancur is a good player, and significantly better than Yves Bissouma. However, this is the perfect time for the midfielder to move on from Tottenham, and I can see a deal being agreed.”

Tottenham need to decide on Bentancur

Bentancur is a first-team regular at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Therefore, he will need to be replaced if he does move on from Spurs.

However, with just one year left on his deal in the summer, a decision needs to be made. If Bentancur isn’t going to sign a new deal, or Spurs don’t want to offer him a new contract, then he needs to be sold.
