Paul Robinson: Susceptible Davinson Sanchez must depart to help Ange Postecoglou solve Tottenham’s biggest weak point

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Davinson Sanchez has had an “indifferent” time at Tottenham and must leave the club if they are to improve their “biggest weak point”, according to Paul Robinson.

The Colombia centre-back has been linked with a move to Spartak Moscow, with Tottenham accepting a £12.9million bid from the Russian side. However, the 27-year-old holds reservations about joining the club amid interest from Real Betis, Sevilla and Galatasaray [The Athletic].

Tottenham’s defence has been the source of much criticism in recent seasons. Sanchez himself was hooked off the pitch after just 23 minutes in April at Bournemouth to jeers from the away support in what felt like the end of his Spurs career.

Robinson claims that Sanchez does not have a place in Ange Postegoclou’s side, with the Australian keen on rejuvenating the Spurs backline.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I think the fact that they’ve accepted a bid in that region tells you a lot of the thinking regarding Sanchez. He’s had an indifferent time at Tottenham.

“I think he’s performed well at times but again, susceptible. There’s always a mistake in him. You look at the level of defending at Spurs, the defence has been probably the biggest weak point for quite a while.

“(Cristian) Romero has been outstanding, he’s of the quality and the level that you need, but you can’t rely on him to turn up on the pitch every week for 90 minutes and not get suspended!

“But with Sanchez, I think if there’s a bid in that region, the club are going to accept it because they brought the manager in for a regenerative project if you like.

“There’s a reason that Spurs haven’t succeeded, new players are needed and new defenders are needed and I think Sanchez will be one that they will look to move on, especially if they can get that kind of money for him.

“But at the moment, he’s under contract and seems reluctant to want to go.”
