Paul Robinson reacts to Harry Kane incident in Tottenham 2-1 loss v Aston Villa

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Paul Robinson believes Tottenham were right to be awared a penalty during their 2-1 loss against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz were enough for Unai Emery’s side to secure a valuable three points in their bid for European football.

Harry Kane netted a late consolation from the spot and Robinson believes it was the correct decision to award a penalty.

“He played for it, but it’s a penalty,” Robinson exclusively told Tottenham Hotspur News.

“He knew exactly what he was doing. Martinez knew the risk. If you come out like that and don’t win the ball, you run the risk of giving away a penalty. Harry Kane’s really clever.

“He leaves his legs in and Martinez takes his legs. If that’s in training, Kane jumps over the goalkeeper and carries on. You’re in a competitive Premier League game and the goalkeeper has given him the opportunity to win a penalty.

“We see it so often. Striker’s that are as good as Kane can read the game that well. He knew Martinez was coming out as the pace he did and he knew that the goalkeeper mistimed it.

“As soon as Kane got the ball he’s well within his rights to initiate contact. He created the penalty. From a goalkeeper’s point of view, I’d be absolutely raging if it was me.

“It’s been done to me numerous times. As a goalkeeper, you run the risk. It’s a penalty. You break it down but if you miss the ball it’s a penalty.”
