Paul Robinson predicts key reason why Harry Kane may stay at Tottenham

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Paul Robinson claims that Harry Kane could stay at Tottenham this season despite Ange Postecoglou not being able to guarantee the England captain trophies.

Robinson claims that Kane staying this season without signing a new contract is not the most unlikely outcome of this transfer saga and should Spurs qualify for the Champions League, chairman Daniel Levy will be in a much stronger negotiation position to secure a deal for their all-time top goalscorer next summer.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I don’t know what Postecoglou could say to Kane. He can obviously give him his vision for the future, for what he wants from the team this year. He’s not going to guarantee him a trophy because, realistically, are Spurs going to win the Premier League? No, they’re not. The chances of winning the FA Cup are less than winning the League Cup.

“Is winning a League Cup enough to keep Kane going to Bayern Munich? We’re yet to see. Or is there the potential for the Champions League? Harry could stay this year without signing a new contract.

“The financial risks of rolling the dice that the club could take of keeping him and getting into the Champions League. The financial reward of getting into the Champions League would far outweigh selling Kane now. But that’s the risk you take.

“There’s a lot of people who will laugh and say Spurs are a million miles away from the Champions League. But if they believe in the new manager and the new signings and they really push for Champions League I believe there’s a real case that even if he doesn’t sign a new contract, he could stay.

“From a personal point of view, he’s got a massive opportunity to go to one of the biggest clubs in Europe, if not the world. He’s potentially going to win league titles, and domestic trophies and he’s going to compete in the Champions League.

“Teddy Sheringham did it. He left Tottenham to go to United and won the treble and came back to Tottenham.

“If Harry does leave I don’t think there’s going to be any Spurs fans that begrudge him going because everybody’s realistic and knows what the situation the club’s in.

“But I don’t think this saga is over. The least likely is him signing a new deal now. I don’t think this summer gives us a fairytale ending. But there is a real opportunity that he stays for another season.”

In other Tottenham news, Robinson makes a big claim about new young signing Manor Solomon as he navigates his way into Postecoglou’s starting 11.
