Paul Robinson predicts ‘bumps in the road’ for Tottenham despite table-topping form

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Paul Robinson expects Tottenham to suffer from a dip in form at some point this season after riding their luck a bit in some of their opening eight Premier League games.

Ange Postecoglou couldn’t have had a better beginning to life in charge at N17 with Spurs enjoying their best-ever start to a Premier League campaign. However, there has been an element of luck in the background of the success.

Tottenham secured three points against Liverpool in suspect fashion, with the eruption of VAR criticism regarding the Reds’ disallowed goal spoiling Spurs’ party. The Lilywhites also left it very late to beat Sheffield United, with two goals in stoppage time sealing three points.

Robinson claims there will inevitably be defeats for Postecoglou’s side amid a hectic league season and “fine margins”, but early signs suggest the squad will be able to handle it.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “It was only one nil [against Luton], but the chances and the opportunities to win the game were there even with 10 men and before that. They should have been out of sight at halftime.

“The Liverpool game, those games can go either way. We spoke for hours on end about the VAR in the Liverpool game. It could be a very different result with the offside goal and the red card.

“The Sheffield United game at home, fine margins, absolutely fine margins. If that does start turning against Tottenham, you would expect what they’ve shown so far that they have enough togetherness in that squad to get through.

“They are going to lose games, they’re going to draw games – it’s a long season. With the style changes they’ve had, there are going to be bumps in the road between now and the end of the season.

“There are tests and there are challenges to come, but the signs so far are that the managers and players can handle that.”
