Paul Robinson: New Son Heung-min contract would be ‘statement signing’ for Tottenham

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Tottenham would be making a “statement signing” if they can get Son Heung-min to commit to a new contract, according to Paul Robinson.

Son has been a star for Spurs ever since he joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015 and was handed the armband by Ange Postecoglou in the summer after Hugo Lloris fell out of favour and Harry Kane left for Bayern Munich.

The South Korea ace has led from the front this term, scoring 11 Premier League goals to help shoulder the burden of losing Kane’s goals.

It was reported by Daily Star journalist Paul Brown to GiveMeSport (19 December) that Tottenham would have no issues getting to renew his deal at the club because he is happy in north London.

Speaking to Tottenham News, Robinson thinks Spurs should get the skipper to commit to the club for as long as he wants.

“Well it would be a statement signing. Looking from the outside in, I can’t imagine Son playing for another team, you just associate him with Tottenham,” he said.

The fanbase that they’ve got, the support that he’s got personally and the way that he is at the club, the relationship that he’s got, I can’t imagine a Tottenham team in the next few years without Son in it.

He’s the captain, he’s taken that mantle on incredibly well, his goalscoring’s got back to a level where you would want it to be this year.

And he’s just a fantastic character, he looks a great person to have around the dressing room in fact I know he is a great person to have around the dressing room, everywhere he goes he just brings light to a room, his personality’s infectious, he cares, he loves the club.

“There’s no reason to not sign him on as long a contract as he would sign.”

Son’s existing contract expires at the end of next season. However, Spurs do hold the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, meaning he’s effectively tied down until the summer of 2026 [Telegraph].

In other Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou may be regretting one decision he signed-off on in the summer.
