Paul Robinson: Bayern Munich-linked Dier can shine at another big club if he exits Tottenham

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Paul Robinson believes Eric Dier could benefit from a move away from Tottenham – even if he moves to play for another big club.

Dier, 29, has played in Spurs’ last two Premier League matches after previously failing to appear all season under Ange Postecoglou. Both matches, however, have ended in defeat for the North London club.

The 49-times England international was linked with an exit from Tottenham in the summer and, according to Bild’s Bayern Insider podcast on 19 October, Bayern Munich are in the hunt to sign him again this January.

Even though Dier has struggled at Tottenham, Robinson feels that if he’s surrounded by better players, he’ll be able to perform a lot better than he has been.

“Yes, I think he can [perform well at a top club] because he’s the type of player who plays well with better players around him,” Robinson told Tottenham News.

You look when he’s played at Tottenham, I think the times he’s struggled are when he’s been exposed.

He’s played on the right-hand side maybe of a three, and he’s had Emerson Royal there, or he’s played on the right of a four and he’s been exposed in the positions on his own.

When he plays in the middle of a three, we’ve seen him do it for England, I think he’s got a lot of quality and he’s got a lot to offer.”

Dier has been forced to play in the last two games due to Cristian Romero being suspended and Micky van de Ven’s suffering from an injury.

In the 2-1 defeat at Wolves on Saturday (11 November), Postecoglou named Dier in his starting line-up for the first time with the ex-Everton defender lining up alongside Ben Davies, who is naturally a full-back, in the heart of the defence.

In other Tottenham news, Robinson believes this player has become a victim of his own versatility at Spurs.
