Manchester United twist emerges in Tottenham push to seal Mathys Tel transfer

Tottenham have taken a massive risk to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich after an update dropped from Manchester United, Dan Plumley has said.

Spurs were said to have paid £8.3million to sign the Frenchman on loan initially, covering the entirety of his wages with an option to buy attached (Christian Falk).

Tel made his debut off the bench for Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final defeat against Liverpool on Thursday, with Ange Postecoglou forced to take action after another injury.

Manchester United make transfer call on Mathys Tel

Plumley, a football finance expert, shared that the Red Devils may have actually rejected a loan fee to sign the Bayern Munich sensation in the same window.

“There is pressure on both sides,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“I think he is only 19 as well, so they’ve got to factor in the age of the player, he’s been thrown into the limelight here.

What’s interesting is we’re led to believe that Man United I think turned down the loan option on the same player.

I guess people will point to that, certainly if it doesn’t work out, you will see the way the story will go, but there is always that pressure, and one thing that clubs are always looking to do and we know how Daniel Levy operates, is that also takes the pressure off Spurs.

You can spin in that way, because if they had just gone out and bought him for £45million, we would have looked at it differently, but given the loan first, albeit with a hefty price tag and still some risk, it does negate that risk to a degree.

I think that is a strategy they have gone down for that regard. It’s Tottenham, all of their transfers will always be scrutinised, it’s the way we’ve operated with that club over the years so there will be pressure there.”

Mathys Tel makes Tottenham debut at Anfield already

Levy was present at Anfield to see one of his new big-money signings take to the field, but it looks as though he has already had enough after images emerged.

Postecoglou may not be around for much longer to work with Tel, with suggestions that crisis talks could be held over his position if Spurs also crash out of the FA Cup against Aston Villa this weekend.

Tel was a risk, but it was certainly one worth taking.
