Little-known rule stopped Tottenham starlet Luka Vuskovic sealing Premier League loan move

Tottenham’s decision to loan Luka Vuskovic abroad is one highly contested among fans.

Daniel Levy went from chants calling for him to leave North London to Tottenham having one of the better windows in the Premier League

The Tottenham chairman welcomed blockbuster signings such as Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons to Tottenham. They also saw a series of exits, including Son Heung-min, who departed Tottenham for LAFC after almost a decade in North London.

But loan moves were also on the agenda, with Mikey Moore leaving Tottenham for Rangers and Yang Min-Hyeok arriving at Portsmouth for the season.

But not all Levy’s decisions have gone down well at Hotspur Way.

Luka Vuskovic loaned abroad due to Premier League rules

Tottenham fans were frustrated to learn about Vuskovic’s potential loan for the remainder of the season.

This was not aided when it was confirmed that Tottenham had decided to loan Vuskovic to Hamburg for the rest of the season. Most were keen on a Championship or even Premier League loan so that he could adapt to the pace of English football.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has reminded fans that the Premier League was never a viable option for Vuskovic.

“My first option for him would have been a Premier League loan or even a Championship loan because I just wanted him to get used to English football,” Wenham said.

“But I’ve since been told that under the rules, you can’t move to a club in the same league, in the same window. So the Premier League would have been out of the question because he officially signed this summer, he couldn’t have gone on loan to another Premier League team.”

How are Tottenham’s loanees getting on?

Manor Solomon’s departure from Tottenham to Villarreal in the final moments of the transfer window was the last bit of loan business from Spurs for another summer.

However, over the course of the summer, some of the Lilywhites’ loanees have been seeing consistent minutes.

Moore has featured in four games for Rangers thus far, accumulating 207 minutes for the Scottish side in all competitions. Meanwhile, Alfie Devine has featured in five games for Preston North End, starting four of the games and already has a goal and an assist to his name.

Tottenham’s loanee’s minutes thus far

Despite playing the full 90 for Portsmouth against Reading on 12 August, Yang has seen his minutes sharply decrease. In his last three games for the Championship side, he has failed to come off the bench.

As such, it has been a mixed bag for Tottenham’s loan players so far, with the North London club expected to revisit the deals in the winter.
