Liam Delap to Tottenham verdict shared after £30m transfer news

Tottenham will be on the lookout for new players this summer after an awful campaign, and it appears Liam Delap is in their sights.

It has been a busy few years when it comes to number nines at Tottenham.

Richarlison joined the club in a mega-money deal in 2022, although his time in North London has been underwhelming, with the Brazilian now expected to leave Tottenham.

In the summer of 2023, Harry Kane was sold to Bayern Munich, and Tottenham once again splashed the cash in 2024 as they sought to replace Kane, breaking their transfer record to sign Dominic Solanke.

However, it looks as though the Lilywhites could be keen to sign another striker this summer, with Delap the latest to be linked.

Tottenham linked with move for Ipswich Town’s Delap

As reported by TBR Football (6 April), Tottenham sent scouts to watch Delap in Ipswich Town’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Wolves at Portman Road on Saturday, 5 April.

Should Ipswich be relegated from the Premier League – which now appears a forgone conclusion – Delap’s release clause will drop to £30million, with Manchester United and Chelsea also circling [The Guardian].

Despite this, it has been suggested that Tottenham could pay as much as £60million to sign the striker, with a bidding war likely to break out.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think a move to North London is on the cards for the 22-year-old.

“Delap has already been at a big club in Manchester City,” Wenham said.

“He took a step down by going to Ipswich Town, and he has played really well. Therefore, he will likely want to go back to another really big club.

“In addition, the fact that his release clause is cheaper doesn’t help us at all. It makes it more likely that Chelsea or Manchester United will go out and sign him. As a result, I would say Delap to Tottenham is a non-starter.”

Tottenham need to back Solanke

While missing out on Delap might be frustrating, it isn’t the end of the world for Tottenham.

Solanke deserves to be backed and show what he can do next season, and other areas of the squad should be upgraded before the striker position.
