John Wenham: Tottenham signing ‘miraculous’ Guglielmo Vicario a sign of ‘fantastic recruitment’
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
John Wenham has described the impact of summer signing Guglielmo Vicario as “miraculous,” and believes the goalkeeper is evidence of “some fantastic recruitment“.
Spurs signed Vicario during the summer from Serie A outfit Empoli, for a reported initial fee of £17.2million (Sky Sports News, 17 June), as a replacement for Hugo Lloris – who is still at the club after failing to find a summer move.
Since his arrival in North London, the Italy international has started all eight league games for Ange Postecoglou’s side and has impressed throughout, racking up an impressive save percentage of 77.14 per cent in the Premier League (Wyscout).

And Wenham has been delighted with the impact the 26-year-old has had on the club so far.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “In Guglielmo Vicario, we suddenly have a goalkeeper that allows us to play out from the back and be confident. However, it is not just his ability on the ball, it is his shot-stopping too.
“I can think of quite a few games this season where around the 10th or 11th minute he has been required to make some sort of miraculous double save.
“I think of that home game against Liverpool, the game against Manchester United, Arsenal away, in each of these games I can remember him making massive saves and it just shows how fantastic of a goalkeeper he is.

“In my opinion, it will not be long until he’s the number one for Italy as well, and that would be some statement to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is a top keeper in his own right.
“Overall, he has been fantastic and to think he is only 26 and we were able to get him for £16million, it really looks like some fantastic recruitment and a top signing.”
In other Tottenham news, the club’s technical director, Johan Lange, is a big fan of one Manchester City player.
