John Wenham: Tottenham fringe players missed chance to feel ‘part of something’ v Wolves

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes the Tottenham fringe players would have felt like a “part of something” if they were able to hold on against Wolves.

With several players missing through injury and suspension, the likes of Eric Dier, Ben Davies and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all returned to the fold for the trip to Wolves.

In the end, despite leading 1-0 until the 90th minute, the hosts scored twice in stoppage time to win the game 2-1 and condemn Tottenham to their second straight league defeat.

Wenham believes that the outlook of the club right now would be very different if Spurs were able to hold on at Molineux.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “To lose four players who have been so key for us this season meant that the Wolves game was always going to be particularly difficult.

“However, to be leading 1-0 for the majority of the match, it is such a shame how that game ended.

“On the balance of play, Wolves did deserve something from the game, but the fact that we couldn’t even get a point from it was tough to take.

“Unfortunately, when you look around at the players that ended the match on the pitch, it was players of another era, players of the Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte era.

“Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil, these are all players that haven’t had a look in under this new management structure.

“Therefore, for a lot of those players, for their own confidence, it would have been fantastic to go there and secure that win, and they would have really felt a part of something and the mood and morale around the club would have been fantastic.”
