John Wenham: Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson has potential to reach heights of Son Heung-min

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes Brennan Johnson has the “potential” to reach the heights that James Maddison and Son Heung-min have been hitting this season.

Spurs duo Son and Maddison have arguably been the club’s two most influential players across the current campaign and have both started all ten league matches.

However, the pair very rarely finish the match on the pitch, with Son completing the full 90 minutes just once in his last seven appearances, and Maddison completing it just once in his last five.

Wenham has supported Postecoglou’s decision to give his star players increased rest, and believes Johnson is a player who has the ability to step up when the pair are not on the pitch.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I’m not really worried about Postecoglou bringing Son and Maddison off early.

“Plenty of Leicester fans I speak to say that Maddison is constantly injured, but he hasn’t been so far for Tottenham, and if it’s going to be down to us managing his minutes like we are, then so be it.

“As for Son, he has got a crazy schedule because he goes off and plays friendlies for South Korea and has the Asia Cup to come in in January and February.

“I think Postecoglou is doing the right thing at the moment by bringing these two off early, and as long as we’re getting the results, I don’t see how anyone can have any questions about that.

“We do still have some firepower to bring off the bench as well. Brennan Johnson is a player who we paid nearly £50million for, a player who has the potential to get to that level of a Maddison or a Son if he develops in the right way.

“He scored ten league goals last year for a struggling Nottingham Forest side, so he is certainly someone who can make things happen.”
