John Wenham: Tottenham cannot get carried away by talk of Premier League title challenge

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes Tottenham must avoid getting “carried away” by talks of a Premier League title challenge and first focus on finishing in the top four.

Ange Postecoglou has made a tremendous start to life in England, leading Spurs to the top of the Premier League after the first ten games of the season.

This has understandably led to some supporters feeling excited about the potential of competing for the Premier League this season.

However, Wenham believes that any talks of a title challenge should be put on pause and Spurs should instead focus on some more realistic aims for the season.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “If you look at the fixtures against Manchester United at home, Liverpool at home and Arsenal away from last season, Tottenham are seven points better off from those games.

“That also means those clubs have lost some points which they gained last season, so Tottenham are positioning themselves really well at the moment.

“Sandro Tonali being suspended is a big loss for Newcastle, who have to contend with the demands of the Champions League and all the injuries that they have.

“That offers Tottenham the chance to get a really healthy lead over Newcastle, who they already sit nine points ahead of, and almost put away one of their rivals for a Champions League position.

“In my opinion, that’s how Tottenham need to be thinking. I know people are getting carried away and talking about a title push, but I think with the one game a week, Spurs really need to just focus on securing Champions League qualification.

“Once that is all but wrapped up points-wise, let’s see where we can go and just build on our progress from there.”
