John Wenham: Season has ‘long way to go,’ Tottenham ownership must ‘back Ange Postecoglou’
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
If Tottenham want to remain in the title race, the club’s ownership must “back Ange Postecoglou and give him what he needs” in the January transfer window, according to John Wenham.
Tottenham currently sit top of the Premier League, two points clear of Manchester City and Arsenal after ten games.
However, both of those teams below them possess much bigger squads with more quality options on their benches, which could prove crucial down the line.

As a result, Wenham believes that while Spurs are currently in a title race, they will need significant backing if they want to remain near the top of the table.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “If you look purely at the facts, we are top, so at the moment, we’re in the title race. However, it is important to remember we are only about 25 per cent of the way through the season, there is a long, long way to go.
“If Tottenham can stay where they are until around January time, that then comes down to the ownership to back Postecoglou and give him what he needs.
“It is pretty obvious to everyone what we need, and that is more squad depth. If James Maddison or either of the centre-backs were to pick up an injury, we’d be in big trouble.

“Therefore, we need solid replacements in those two areas. Giovani Lo Celso is not a reliable replacement, he is never available, so we need another creative player to cover for Maddison.
“Also, another centre-back, because in my opinion, we will definitely qualify for a European competition this season, so we need a bigger squad.
“It is okay playing the same team when you have one game a week, but as other clubs are finding out when you are in Europe, you will pick up injuries.”
In other Tottenham news, one fresh face shone for Spurs’ Under-21s as they picked up their tenth consecutive win of the season.
