John Wenham predicts a ‘hugely successful’ league finish for Tottenham this year
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
It is “quite possible” Tottenham will qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season on the back of a “hugely successful” league campaign, according to John Wenham.
From next season, Europe’s elite competition is set to undergo a massive revamp, and this means that certain nations will receive extra qualifying spots.
Those in the top two UEFA coefficient spots will be given an extra qualification place, and with England more than likely to fall within those spots, it means that the top five will qualify for the Champions League this season, instead of the top four.

And with that in mind, Wenham believes that Tottenham could be making their return to the competition next season after a year out of Europe entirely.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I did a prediction for the BBC at the start of the season where I predicted that we would finish fifth, and I based a lot of that on the fact we have no European football.
“However, looking at the number of games some of the other teams have lost already, I believe it is quite possible we could finish higher than that.
“I do still think that fifth is a good bet, in the knowledge that this is a new team, it is a young team, the games will get harder, and fifth would be a good place to finish because I believe it will get us a UEFA Champions League spot this year.

“I looked at the UEFA coefficients and England is well above all the others, and I expect the English clubs to all go far in Europe this year.
“Therefore, I am relatively confident that we will get a UEFA Champions League spot this season, whether that be fifth or fourth, who knows.
“Coming from eighth last year, with the total rebuild we’ve had and losing Harry Kane, fifth would still be a hugely successful season for the club.”
