John Wenham left ‘disappointed’ by Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham team selection in Fulham loss
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
There was a real “dissatisfaction” among Tottenham supporters after Ange Postecoglou made wholesale changes to the team at Craven Cottage on Tuesday 29 August, according to John Wenham.
Despite not having any European competition to compete in this season, Postecoglou decided to make plenty of changes to his side against Fulham, which resulted in Spurs being dumped out of the Carabao Cup on penalties.
It was a decision that came back to bite the Australian, and one that left many people surprised due to the club’s already light schedule, which is now even lighter with just the FA Cup and Premier League left to compete in.

And Wenham believes that the finger must be pointed at Spurs’ head coach for his decision-making on the evening.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I was beyond disappointed because there was a lot of goodwill towards the manager up until that point. I was at the game, with 6,000 other Spurs fans, and as soon as the team came out, there was a real sense of disappointment and dissatisfaction from the supporters.
“There are only two domestic cups you can win, and I really didn’t see the need to change the team, and if he was going to change the team, he could have just made two or three changes, he didn’t need to make nine.
“We have seen this so many times before, you make all these changes, and you bring a mixture of new players together and it ends badly. I was very disappointed.

“I don’t blame Davinson Sanchez at all either. You’ve got to be putting your hand up to take a penalty and he did. You’ve got to question the midfielders and strikers who were on the pitch at that time who weren’t putting their hand up or demanding to take penalties.
“I think the manager on that one has to take the blame, I don’t think anyone else can be blamed. Then once the game got underway, the first half was very poor. We got back into it at 1-1, and at that point, we made a couple of changes.
“I really wanted us to progress in that cup this year, but on the bright side, the morale has picked up again, with the result at Burnley, and hopefully we can put that Fulham game down as an anomaly.”
