John Wenham hails signing of Ashley Phillips as a ‘phenomenal’ piece of business
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
Tottenham have completed the signing of Ahley Phillips and must continue to add “the best young British young players,” according to John Wenham.
On Saturday 8 August, Spurs announced that they had finally completed the signing of a brand-new centre-back in the form of Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips.
And while the club continue to cry out for defensive reinforcements, the signing of Phillips is certainly one for the future, rather than an instant fix to their current defensive troubles.
Although he might not make an instant impact, Wenham believes that Phillips has all the “characteristics” to be a top centre-back in the future and praises the club for continuing to make these types of signings.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I think that’s a phenomenal bit of business from Tottenham for a guy that has played a decent number of Championship games already at a really young age.
“He has all the physique and characteristics to be a top-level centre-back, so I’m really excited to see him join.

“He is the exact sort of signing I want Tottenham to make, every summer I want us to be adding the best young British players we can.
“We’ve done that successfully last year, Will Lankshear joined from Sheffield United, Josh Keeley from St. Pat’s in Ireland, Jude Soonsup-bell who joined from Chelsea.
“I just want us adding all the time, top Academy talent to go with first-team signings, and obviously over time, I hope that the majority of fans will understand that these don’t impact on the first-team.
