John Wenham excited to see ‘leader’ Yves Bissouma in action for Tottenham this season

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Yves Bissouma could feel like a “new signing” as he appears to have become a “leading character” for Tottenham, according to John Wenham.

Bissouma arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Brighton in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth up to £35million (Sky Sports News, 17 June), although hardly got a chance to show what he could do under Antonio Conte.

The 26-year-old played just 1,272 minutes during his debut season in North London, and a lack of consistent starts, as well as injuries, meant he failed to get going. With the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, that could all be set to change.

Postecoglou is likely to play a brand of football that is more suited to the Mali international and Wenham believes the midfielder could be set for a leading role and is eagerly anticipating seeing what he can bring during his second year at the club.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I’ve been really impressed with him during preseason, he seems to have become a real leading character in the squad. In terms of his interactions with everybody, the new signings, he seems like a really big character.

“Hopefully that confidence, as well as getting his favourite number eight shirt, all points towards him being heavily involved this year, feeling good on the pitch, and feeling like a leader in the squad.

“We need him to be the player he was at Brighton because that’s like another new signing for us.

“Having somebody like the Bissouma we saw at Brighton will be absolutely massive for this Tottenham team and something to really be excited about.

“I’m looking for a really big season from him.”
