John Wenham delivers ‘6 /10’ verdict on the Tottenham summer transfer window

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Tottenham struggled during the summer transfer window as the club’s “outgoings were really poor,” according to John Wenham.

It was a busy summer of signings at Hotspur Way with the likes of James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson all signing for the club.

However, while plenty of fresh faces arrived, some of the same old players weren’t moved on. The likes of Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris remain in North London despite not being a part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans and some other unwanted players were only able to secure loan switches, rather than permanent ones.

And Wenham believes that while some exciting additions were made, it doesn’t paper over the cracks of a transfer window where not enough was done.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I think you’ve got to look at the bigger picture with our transfer window because if we have one injury to Micky van de Ven or Cristian Romero, we’re back to the defence that shipped 63 goals last year. Therefore, I don’t think you can give it a massively high mark, especially when no attempt was made to replace our greatest-ever player and striker that was sold.

“I know you can’t really replace him directly, but there are strikers in the Premier League. Evan Ferguson at Brighton and Taiwo Awoniyi at Nottingham Forest are both strikers who would give us a focal outpoint as they are big out-and-out forwards, and we didn’t try and get anybody like that.

“I think the incomings were good, but the fact that we have still got Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier at the club, amongst others, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg who they tried to get out, the outgoings were really poor, and there weren’t enough of them.

“There are some additions I love, James Madison is fantastic, and Guglielmo Vicario, so I’d probably give it a six out of 10.

“Incomings wise, I’d say eight out of 10, but for the outgoings it’s got to be a three or four out of 10 because we’ve struggled, just getting a couple of loans and that sort of thing.”
