John Wenham ‘delighted’ with Tottenham signing ‘leader’ Brennan Johnson

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Tottenham summer signing Brennan Johnson is a real “leader,” and his price tag is just the “going rate” for a player of his stature, according to John Wenham.

On deadline day, Spurs announced via Twitter (1 September) that they had signed Wales forward Johnson from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £47.5million (Sky Sports News, 2 September).

Johnson, 22, made his Premier League debut last season with his boyhood club after their promotion from the Championship, and held his own during his first season in the division, scoring eight times and helping the Reds stay up.

And Wenham is hopeful that he will be a fantastic addition to the Tottenham squad and believes that his price tag is justified.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I really like Brennan Johnson, I think he gives us a real option on the right wing, I could see him starting a lot of games for us, possibly in front of Dejan Kulusevski.

“He has pace to burn, and I think he’s another leader and character in the same style of James Maddison. We’ve suddenly got a team with a bit of personality. Before we had that leadership group of Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

“Now, with Son-Heung-min, Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, we’ve suddenly got a new feeling at the club, a new identity, that hopefully can get us over the line in those big games and finals, and I think Johnson adds to that.

“I think he’s a really exciting player, 22, homegrown, meaning we have now sorted out our homegrown issues for years to come with actual homegrown players that contribute to the first team with the likes of Maddison, Johnson, and Oliver Skipp as well.

“I was really delighted with the signing. He was in a Nottingham Forest team last season which didn’t create that many chances or score that many goals, and still got 10 goals overall, with a few assists as well.

“I think the price tag is what you pay for a homegrown 22-year-old, it’s just the going rate.”

In other Tottenham news, one star at the club stole the show with a fantastic solo assist while on international duty.
