John Wenham blasts ‘ridiculous’ Tottenham fans after what happened to Brennan Johnson

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes the criticism of Brennan Johnson from Spurs supporters is “ridiculous” after the forward struggled against Manchester City.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were knocked out of the FA Cup after City claimed a 1-0 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday 26 January.

It was the first time Pep Guardiola’s side had scored at Spurs’ new stadium on what was their sixth visit to the ground.

One player who particularly struggled for the home side was Johnson, as Spurs failed to create many meaningful opportunities going forward, registering just one shot at goal across the whole match.

As per Sofascore, the 22-year-old completed just 50 per cent of his passes, failed to provide an accurate cross into the box from two attempts and missed Tottenham’s one big chance.

He won zero of his three duels, was dribbled past once and gave possession away 13 times.

Despite having a night to forget, Wenham believes criticism of the winger is uncalled for.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I’ve seen some people criticising Johnson already. I think that’s just ridiculous.

“We’re talking about a young player who has already proven that he can be a success in the Premier League with those 10 goals for Nottingham Forest last season.

“He has been okay for Tottenham so far, he’s got a few assists and he has also been a bit unlucky at moments as well.

“There’s been at least two occasions where he has hit the woodwork and had those chances have gone in then his stats would look better, and people wouldn’t be moaning about him as much.

“I am sure Johnson will come good for Tottenham and I am fully behind him.”

In other Tottenham news, one pundit believes Spurs will find themselves in a “big queue” as part of their pursuit for one Leeds United ace.
