John Wenham believes Tottenham must now ‘focus on outgoings’ until deadline day

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Tottenham must spend the remainder of the summer transfer window moving players on from the club as the current squad numbers have left Ange Postecoglou in an “unworkable” situation, according to John Wenham.

Supporters usually associate summer transfer windows with new players arriving and a chance to fall in love with some fresh heroes at their club. So far this summer the likes of Micky van de Ven, Manor Solomon, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario have all arrived as first-team additions.

Some Spurs fans will remain dissatisfied, though, and call for more, with gaps still remaining in certain areas of the squad.

However, Wenham has reminded those fans that with the number of players currently on the books, making any more signings this summer is virtually impossible, and the club must now get into the sales business.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I think the club must now focus on outgoings because, at the moment, we simply cannot register all the players we’ve got.

“We have only managed to offload three homegrown players, Harry Kane, Harry Winks, and Joe Rodon. You’re only allowed to name 17 non-homegrown players, we’ve got 20 at the moment, there’s got to be some movement on the non-homegrown players.

“I know fans don’t really understand these homegrown rules and regulations, but essentially, we cannot make any more signings. Ange Postecoglou has made it abundantly clear that the situation with so many players is unworkable and unmanageable.

“Especially when we haven’t even got European games to offer some of these players, it will lead to frustration, so we must prioritise getting players out the door.

“There are some really easy ones as well. Tanguy Ndombele, Hugo Lloris and Sergio Reguilon have to be moved on. Davinson Sanchez will probably go because even though he played alright against Brentford, Spurs are at the point where they need to accept offers for some of these players.

“Some of the younger English players, Djed Spence and Japhet Tanganga need to move on for their own good.

“Postecoglou has had a look at almost all of the players I named, they have played pre-season games for him, and decisions now need to be made.

“For a club that just has the 38 league games this season, it is just an unworkable situation at the moment. It also means that we can’t call up our best younger players to the first team because there are just too many bodies on the pitch using the training facilities and the gym.”
