John Wenham believes Hugo Lloris ‘needs to leave’ Tottenham sooner rather than later

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Hugo Lloris is “losing a lot of the goodwill” he has with Tottenham supporters and “needs to leave,” according to John Wenham.

Lloris has spent more than a decade in North London with Tottenham in the Premier League and will go down as one of the club’s greatest-ever goalkeepers. However, as he has gotten older, his performances have begun to see a sharp decline.

He was at fault for plenty of goals last season and, with less than a year left on his contract, looked set to leave this summer. Nonetheless, despite being linked with moves away and seeing a number one signed to replace him in the form of Guglielmo Vicario, the World Cup winner did not make his exit.

Wenham believes Lloris must move on, though with transfer windows closing he finds himself in a very tricky position.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “There has been talk of Tottenham potentially cancelling contracts of some of the players that have stuck around, including Hugo Lloris.

“Where does Lloris actually think he’s going to go is my question. He reportedly turned down a move to Saudi Arabia at the start of the window, so he’s not in it for the big money. He reportedly turned down a move to Newcastle, where I think he would have been a backup.

“He reportedly turned down a move to Nice, which was a club he started out with, and it was always made out that he might want to return there one day. He turned down a move to Lazio as well.

“The issue for Lloris is even if we cancel his contract, David de Gea is also on the market as a free signing, and he is better. Premier League squads have until the 13th of September to submit their squads, so where does he think he’s going to go?

“I do now think Lloris is losing a lot of the goodwill and reputation that he has built up with Tottenham fans. For his own good, I think he needs to sort out his next move and leave the club.”
