John Wenham drops verdict on Tottenham clash v Liverpool
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
John Wenham is anticipating “a really tough test” for Spurs when they take on Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (30 September).
Tottenham have not beaten Liverpool since a 4-1 win at Wembley during the 2017/18 season under former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Both teams are unbeaten in the Premier League after six matches and the fixture represents another hurdle for Ange Postecoglou to overcome following a trip to the Emirates last time out, where Spurs drew 2-2 with Arsenal in the North London derby.

Wenham believes Spurs have had a fair share of bad luck in this fixture over recent seasons but is more than confident they can hold their own against the Reds.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I’ve watched quite a lot of Liverpool and I’ve been really impressed with them, I think they’ve turned a corner and Jurgen Klopp seems to be building this Liverpool 2.0, which looks really good.
“It’ll be a really tough test. Liverpool are the only team we are yet to beat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since moving there. We’ve been very unlucky with the refereeing decisions in this fixture in the last few years and we have conceded a fair few last-minute goals, so at some point, it’s got to go right for Tottenham.
“I would take a draw if that was offered to me now. I just think it’s vital that we can keep our unbeaten run going past this fixture because we’ve got some really winnable games coming up.

“For me, Arsenal away was always the harder fixture and Tottenham really stood up and took credit from that, so if we can carry that on against Liverpool, that’d be fantastic. If we somehow managed to get four points out of those two fixtures, that would be a remarkable turnaround in such a short period of time for Ange Postecoglou, compared to what we’ve done in the last five or six years in that pair of fixtures.
“However, if we do end up losing the fixture, I don’t think that dents our progress. It is a tough fixture, and I don’t want whatever happens, if it is negative, to take away from what’s been a really positive start to the season.”
