John Wenham: Ange Postecoglou must ‘adapt’ Tottenham system to involve wingers more

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

Both Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski haven’t been particularly “effective” this season and Ange Postecoglou might need to “adapt the system,” according to John Wenham.

Despite being eliminated from the Carabao Cup on Tuesday 29 August at the hands of Fulham, it has been an otherwise positive start to Postecoglou’s time as Tottenham’s manager.

Nonetheless, both Son and Kulusevski have struggled to impact their three Premier League matches so far, scoring just once between them, with the Swede grabbing his side’s second at Bournemouth on Saturday 26 August.

And Wenham believes that Postecoglou might have to make some slight changes to get more out of his two stars out wide.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I think we might have to adapt the system a little bit.

“I know Postecoglou likes the wingers to hug the touchline and isolate their full-backs out wide, however, they might both have to come in a little bit because they’re far more effective when they can pick up the ball and make things happen, rather than just being put out on the wing as an outlet.

“So, I think that we will need to amend the system, just slightly, to bring them in so that we can get them both involved because they haven’t been particularly effective so far this season.

“With Son, I do back him to come back and show his previous form. I think last year he experienced a real dip for a lot of reasons, but I still believe he will get back to his best this season.”

In other Tottenham news, the club’s Under-21s maintained their winning start to the campaign.
