Jamie Donley ‘closest’ Tottenham U21s star to Ange Postecoglou senior shot – Expert

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes there have been more “opportunities” for the Under-21 players at Tottenham this season, naming Jamie Donley as the “closest” to the first-team picture.

Spurs’ Under-21s are flying high, sitting top of Premier League Two with a seven-point advantage, with a number of the players at this level emerging as serious first-team prospects this season.

As a result of their brilliant form, the likes of Jamie Donley, Will Lankshear and Alfie Dorrington have all earned themselves spots in at least one of Ange Postecoglou’s matchday squads.

With this in mind, Wenham believes that the Australian’s arrival is opening more doors for these players, and has discussed the impact of these opportunities.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “It is huge because these players will go back and talk about the experience in the changing room with the other players.

“This sends a positive message to those players that if you play well, you’ll get an opportunity and you’ll get the chance to even just train with the first team and take it from there.

“It’s all about opportunities, opening doors and creating pathways and we’re seeing that at Tottenham now since Postecoglou’s arrival.

“Donley has been on the bench for games against Liverpool and Wolves, while he was also the 21st man against Luton Town.

“He’s obviously the closest of the current players to breaking into the first-team squad, but it was also great to see the likes of Dorrington and Lankshear get on the bench against Wolves as well.”

Donley, 18, is yet to make a senior appearance for Tottenham.
