James Wilson on ‘strange’ trial-like period at Tottenham ahead of summer move

Tottenham signed James Wilson on loan from Hearts on transfer deadline day.

Spurs beat arch-rivals Arsenal for Wilson’s signature, with the 18-year-old moving to Hotspur Way over the lure of Mikel Arteta’s title contenders.

The Scottish youngster is expected to link up with the Under-21 side, but could make first-team appearances if injuries continue to ravage Thomas Frank‘s side for the remainder of the campaign.

However, one aspect of the deal to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has baffled John Wenham.

Why is Wenham surprised by James Wilson deal?

Wenham believes that the conditions of the deal are bizarre and that it is essentially a trial, given that it is a loan with an option, rather than a mandatory clause.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “I see that as a trial period for him, we have an option to buy, rather than an obligation.

“That looks like a five-month trial basically, he will come, we will see how he settles in.

“We’ve already got Mason Melia, so he will be battling with him for minutes, or maybe they will play two upfront in the Under-21s.

“He has walked out of a Hearts team that may go on to win the league to come on loan to us, strange.

“He has already made 45 senior appearances; he is quite well developed.

Hopefully he does well enough to convince Tottenham to make the move permanent.”

Why Tottenham supporters should be excited by Wilson signing

Of course, it is one for the future, rather than a player who can come in and start right now, but it still an encouraging addition, despite the lack of other business before the deadline.

Wilson has featured 45 times for the senior Hearts side, and he has notched eight goals and three assists in that time, which is not a bad record at all.

Five of those strikes and one assist have come in 26 Scottish Premiership matches, which suggests that he has the ability to thrive at the highest level and is not overwhelmed by the challenge.

Only time will tell whether he makes it with the Lilywhites, but he certainly has what it takes to do so, if he is given the chance.
