James Maddison ‘could try to quit Tottenham against Levy’s wishes’

Tottenham may be forced to prepare for life without James Maddison with an exit on the cards this summer.

As a whole, Tottenham have endured a nightmare of a season, though they do still have a chance to finish the campaign with silverware.

Now through to the Europa League quarterfinals, it is Tottenham’s only remaining chance of a trophy, but also their only opportunity to secure European football for the new season.

Failure to achieve that would not only have a drastic effect on the future of Ange Postecoglou but could also lead to concerns over the futures of several first-team players.

Tottenham could lose Maddison this summer

Despite all of the criticism, Maddison has still played a crucial role for Tottenham this season, and they would be far worse off without him.

However, they may face that possibility in the summer if they fail to secure European football, according to Paul Robinson.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I think the way that he’s been rotated in and out the side with Postecoglou this season, I’m not so sure whether it would sit well with him.

“You see where Maddison plays best when he plays in that number 10 role and he’s given the freedom to operate there. In the 4-3-3 system with him playing as a deep-lying, left-hand-sided midfielder, I can understand the third man running in the box, and the vision that he’s got. But actually, when Maddison is deployed in that 10 role like he was last year when Spurs had all the success, and this year to an extent when he plays, he’s a better player playing in that 10 role.

“But Maddison, for me, if he’s fit and playing, he plays in big games, when you play the Manchester Cities, the Liverpools, the Arsenals, and you play in Europe. And that might be a frustration for him under Postecoglou.

“I don’t think Spurs would have a problem holding on to him. They can rebuff bids for him. But it’s just down to the player’s desire as to what he wants and where he wants to be.

“Tottenham without European football is a blow for, one, keeping players and two, for recruitment.”

Postecoglou departure could start mass exodus at Tottenham

The Europa League is likely the only thing keeping Postecoglou in a job at Spurs, and should they fail in their attempts to win, it feels inevitable that he will be sacked.

However, if that were to be the case, you can expect to see several other players and staff depart the club in order to escape a Europe-less season in North London, despite Daniel Levy’s inevitable wishes to retain them.

Quite frankly, Tottenham need to put their entire focus on the Europa League and forget about anything else that occurs between now and the end of the campaign.
