Injury Expert: Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur still weeks away from return

We’re delighted to welcome injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the injury situation at Tottenham Hotspur...

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is still weeks away from returning to first-team football, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert claims that it will be a very slow return to training for the Uruguay international, who ruptured his ACL back in February.

The expectations were that he’ll be back in individual training by now, with Ange Postecoglou saying at the start of September that he’s targeting a November return for the 26-year-old. [Football London]

Discussing Bentancur’s situation exclusively with Tottenham News, Dr Brar, a doctor in physical therapy and a sports scientist, said: “It will be a very methodical return to play that involves ramping up intensity and spontaneity of movement, from a controlled on-grass environment to multi-directional to sport-specific actions.

“He still seems some way away from returning to first-team training so it’s too early to offer a timeline.

“It does seem like weeks instead of months but there are a lot of intangibles.

“The knee reconstruction process is also a complicated one and there are chances of setbacks given the nature of the injury.

Bentancur was a first-team regular for Spurs last term before his season-ending injury.

He made 18 league appearances until February and also played in all six of the club’s group-stage games in the Champions League.

This season, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have been rock solid in the middle of the park and James Maddison has been undroppable at number 10.

Thus, it’s not going to be easy for Bentancur to win his place back in the midfield of the North London side.

In other Tottenham news, a forgotten Spurs full-back may feel like a new signing under Postecoglou.
