Ian Darke thrilled with Tottenham truth shared by James Maddison in interview

James Maddison was correct in his comments that Tottenham Hotspur still had to be at their best to beat Southampton on Sunday, according to Ian Darke.

Maddison told TNT Sports [15 December] that Spurs had to show everything they had in a difficult run to come out on top, despite the level of the Saints side they were facing.

Darke, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, backed the comments of the attacking midfielder, whose brace contributed to the five-goal half-time lead Ange Postecoglou’s side raced into at St Mary’s.

“Southampton are miles off it, but you don’t get given anything at the top level. I watched James Maddison’s interview after the last game and he’s right, they still had to go out and play to their best,” he said.

“Spurs’ best, of course, was way too much for Southampton – whose defence at this point probably needs to register as a charity.

“It was a great win for Tottenham and I was pleased for Postecoglou. They’re an entertaining team to watch – there’s no doubt about it – but they’re very, very infuriating as well.”

Tottenham still on for successful season despite setbacks

Tottenham still have plenty to fight for despite the frustration of many fans in N17 – though much of this is directed towards Daniel Levy rather than Postecoglou and the squad.

The Lilywhites invite Manchester United to the capital in a crucial Carabao Cup quarter-final on Thursday [19 December] – this trophy was the last piece of silverware the club scooped, now almost 17 years ago.

A trip to non-league Tamworth beckons to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup, and Spurs – though 10th in the Premier League – remain just five points adrift of the Champions League places.

In Europe currently, the side sit ninth in the league phase of the Europa League with two fixtures remaining.

In other Tottenham news, a potential exit lined up for a defender who has featured a lot more of late.
