Harry Kane backed to retire at Tottenham after £54m transfer reveal
Tottenham fans will be dreaming of Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane making a return to the club.
Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer – who is thought to have played a part in Mathys Tel’s move to North London – left his boyhood club to join Bayern Munich in 2023.
However, the 31-year-old could yet make a return to Spurs, with Christian Falk reporting via X on Wednesday (5 February) that the England captain has a £54million release clause in his Bayern Munich contract which will become active in the summer of 2026.
When asked about the possibility of Kane returning to North London, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – provided an optimistic answer.
“I’d like to think that this is a player who could finish his career at Tottenham,” King said.
“I know he left Spurs with the intention of winning trophies, and it looks as though he might fulfil that ambition this year by winning the Bundesliga. I’d like to think that Kane will come back and finish his career at Tottenham.
“I’m surprised there would be a release clause for him to return to Tottenham, and whether it would cost them that much. However, if that is what it says in the contract, then that is what is in the contract.
“It is an awful lot of money to pay for a player who won’t exactly be in his prime at that point. However, I’m sure Kane making his return would quickly generate that money back for the club.”
Bayern Munich star Harry Kane to return to Tottenham?
Returning to Tottenham wouldn’t just be a sentimental move for Kane, who has clearly demonstrated he still has a lot of love for Spurs.
The striker is second in the all-time Premier League goalscoring charts, and returning to Tottenham would provide him an opportunity to overtake Alan Shearer.
Therefore, there is certainly reason for Kane to head back to his boyhood club. However, whether or not Spurs would pay the money is a different story. A fee of £54million is a lot for a player who will be approaching his mid-thirties.

However, when it comes to Kane and Tottenham, most fans will argue that no fee is too much to see the player finish his career where it all started.
