‘Gap in class’ exists between Tottenham Women and top WSL sides – Expert

John Wenham believes there remains a “gap in class” between Tottenham Women and the top teams in the WSL despite the “progression that is being made” by the club

Robert Vilahamn’s Tottenham Women side had lost just once all season prior to their 7-0 thrashing away at Manchester City Women on Sunday 26 November.

It was a humbling result for the north London side, who had the opportunity to leapfrog City into third position with victory.

Wenham believes that the result will act as a reminder that Tottenham still have some way to go despite their positive start this season.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I thought we actually looked positive in the midfield, and I don’t think the scoreline was a fair reflection of the performance.

“Defensively we were poor, but it also did feel as if Manchester City seemed to score with almost every chance they created.

“Work does need to be done in January to help boost the squad and continue the progression that is being made, because in recent weeks we have been drawing a few games that we were losing last year, so progress has certainly been made.

“I just think they need a few more wins on the board and they will need to put this result against City down as a blip and move on.

“There is certainly a gap in class within the WSL. Almost the entire England Women’s team that is so successful is just filled with players from Arsenal Women, Chelsea Women and Manchester City.

“Spurs do need to try and invest a bit more and maybe get another statement signing through the door, similar to the profile of Beth England, in order to bridge that gap.”

In other Tottenham news, one out-of-favour player’s price tag could act as a stumbling block in any potential January move.
