Finance Expert: Tottenham can save ‘long-term financial pain’ by terminating Hugo Lloris’ contract

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Terminating Hugo Lloris’ Tottenham contract would help the club avoid some “long-term financial pain”, according to Dan Plumley.

Lloris had been linked with a move away from North London and the Premier League all summer, although a transfer never materialised and the Frenchman now finds himself in a tricky situation.

After more than a decade with the club, it seems as if his career with Spurs is set to end on a rather sour note, with Plumley suggesting that a termination of his contract might be best for all involved.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Plumley said: “Again, it is really tricky from the player’s side of things. But if you’ve got a player there, particularly a goalkeeper where there is not that much rotation, and if he is not in the plans at all, then you can’t now shift him until at least January.

“And they have not been able to move him on in the summer, so you might not be able to move him on in January. So you’re taking the risk of paying a year’s worth of wages and if he is not in the plans at all to play then it is just dead money in that regard because he is not contributing to the squad.

“A termination, if it is on favourable terms for player and club, can save them some long-term financial pain in terms of the wages that they would have to pay out.

“So a termination is not a bad way to go because it might be a bit of a hit that you have got to do a settlement, but you probably save in the long run.”
