Finance Expert shares Tottenham verdict on Champions League and Europa League windfalls
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...
Dan Plumley has insisted that missing out on the Champions League will hit the finances of Tottenham hard after their disappointing year in the Premier League.
The finance expert admitted that English clubs earn more by just reaching the group stages of the world’s biggest competition compared to winning the Europa League.
It is now mathematically impossible for Tottenham to finish in the top four with only one game left in the Premier League, away at Leeds next week.

“There is a big swing between the Champions League and Europa League,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.
“So, a couple of seasons ago, Spurs were earning £90million, I think they earned £100million when they got to the final with Liverpool. For an English club, it’s a minimum of £50million for the Champions League, and then obviously, depending on how far you go, you can stretch that towards £90million.
“Again, contrast that to the Europa League, even if you win it, you’re talking about £20-25million tops, it may be more for English clubs because the coefficient is good in the market, but ballpark figures, you could win the Europa League and you’re not earning as much for just getting into the group stages of the Champions League.
“The big swing is between those two competitions, certainly for Spurs, the model has been built around regular Champions League football and that’s where they need to be, so it will have a significant hit on the finances.”

Daniel Levy will not be happy, and looking at these numbers it is clear to see why.
With Antonio Conte and Cristian Stellini, both being dismissed from their roles in charge this season, the desperation to push for that top four was clear, it just wasn’t meant to be for Tottenham.
