Finance Expert shares Tottenham transfer verdict after Harry Kane exit

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Tottenham fans shouldn’t expect too much movement in the market, despite the recent big-money sale of Harry Kane, according to Dan Plumley.

After many years as Spurs’ main man, Kane finally left the Premier League behind in search of the game’s biggest trophies. On Saturday 12 August, the club’s official website confirmed that he had completed his move to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

While many would expect, and even demand, the club to dip into the transfer market after such a high-profile sale, Plumley has cast doubts over whether or not those supporters’ expectations will be met.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Plumley said: “That is the next big question for Spurs. Now that Kane has ended up at Bayern Munich, there is a big hole there for Spurs from a striker perspective.

How do you replace someone like Kane, who has been consistently scoring goals for fun in recent seasons, it’s going to take a big fee. Who is out there that potentially wants that move? I think the fans will demand a big transfer, whether or not they get that is another matter because, financially, Spurs don’t need to, it’s more from a playing perspective.

We know at times, too, that they haven’t delved into the market when people thought they would, so I think we will see some movement at Spurs, but I’m not sure that it will be a big marquee signing.

“It’s probably not what Spurs fans want to hear, but the reality of the situation is that this is probably a team now in transition, without their main goalscorer.”
