Finance Expert: Joe Lewis controversy will not have an impact on any takeover of Tottenham

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Joe Lewis’ recent legal troubles will not have a big impact on the ownership situation at Tottenham, according to Dan Plumley.

At the end of July, it was revealed that Lewis, who is 86 years old, had been hit with 19 charges, which included three counts of securities fraud, with the alleged crimes being said to have taken place between 2013 and 2021 when Lewis was the direct owner of Spurs. Lewis entered a not guilty plea on July 26.

The situation left many supporters questioning whether this would have an impact or lead to a takeover of the club. This is not thought to be the case according to Plumley, who has pointed to Lewis moving some of his shares which removed him as a person of significant control.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Plumley said: “I don’t think this will play a massive part if there is an overall takeover.

“We have seen noises of that in the past with Spurs anyway and we know they’re kind of loosely always up for sale, even though it is a big asking price, £3billion at least.

“There is enough to distance Joe Lewis from Tottenham Hotspur now, he passed over ultimate control and he is not directly associated with any form of ownership there, and the club and the Premier League have made points to that effect.

“I think moving forward in the bigger picture it won’t harm Spurs too much if we’re talking in terms of an overall takeover, I think the biggest barrier to that will still be the price of the club and where they are in the Premier League pecking order.

“But obviously it will and has generated PR and media coverage, because of his previous links with the club in an official capacity.”
