Finance Expert: Jay-Z will need to offer more than £2billion for Tottenham takeover

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Rap icon Jay-Z has been linked with a £2billion bid to complete a takeover of Tottenham but that will not be enough to get a deal done, according to Dan Plumley.

As reported by Football London (30 July), speculation has been swirling that hip-hop superstar and multi-billionaire Jay-Z is interested in a potential takeover of Tottenham following Joe Lewis’ recent legal issues.

It is a proposition that finance expert Plumley has described as “interesting,” although he believes the reported fee will not be enough, with Spurs often playing hardball.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Plumley said: “I think it is probably a little bit lower than what Spurs want. I think they will be wanting £3billion or north of that, certainly given the stadium and the deals that are there to generate extra revenue from that.

“We know Spurs have always played hardball with figures, whether it is in the transfer market, valuations, or the way they run the club, so that is probably expected.

“The other side of that is what an interesting proposition from one of the biggest rap/music stars on the planet, now potentially looking at owning Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

“A really interesting story, but I think in terms of the valuation probably a bit lower than where Spurs have set their sights.”

Tottenham’s immediate focus, of course, is the Premier League. Spurs hammered Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 on Sunday (6 August) as they gear up for a return to domestic action.

Ange Postecoglou will make his competitive bow as Tottenham boss at Brentford this coming Sunday (13 August).
