Finance Expert: Antonio Conte risk will not pay off if Tottenham miss out on Champions League

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Dan Plumley has insisted that the risk of sacking Antonio Conte will not pay off for Spurs if they do not secure Champions League football this season.

The finance expert admitted that paying off managers cannot provide guarantees in football, with the London club dropping significantly since the reign of Conte ended.

Spurs currently sit sixth in the Premier League and are nine points off the top four with four games left to play, making it very unlikely after numerous losses.

“It’s proof that there are no guarantees in football, even at the top end,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“You’re not guaranteed Champions League football and that is what this will be related to as much as anything.

I think you can track that back further, you can look to the time when Pochettino was sacked or just before that when they never really invested in the squad and people thought they should have done and the manager was perhaps calling for that.

“They have been a club that’s done extremely well financially over the last couple of decades, and you can see the new stadium and what that brings, but they haven’t always invested in that squad and they’ve been through a bit of a change in marquee managers which has cost them a lot of money.

If you don’t make the Champions League, it can come back to hurt you. This one you would look at that as a risk not paying off if they do miss out on Champions League which looks likely at this point in time.”

Tottenham's Daniel Levy

Daniel Levy has already made the decision to move on Cristian Stellini too after he took over from Conte, with Ryan Mason now in charge for the rest of the season, it seems.

Games against Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Brentford and Leeds are to come, as Spurs look to salvage their season from embarrassment.
