FA to contact Postecoglou, ‘Tamworth may be fined’ as Tottenham allegation made

Tamworth could be fined by The FA after incidents in the stands against Tottenham on Sunday.

Spurs had to wait until extra-time to beat the National League side 3-0 to progress to the fourth round of The FA Cup.

Tamworth’s resilience on the pitch has made national headlines. However, behaviour off the pitch could leave the Staffordshire club suffering a financial penalty.

As quoted by BBC Sport on Tuesday (14 January), Ange Postecoglou revealed that he was on the end of “vile and detestable” abuse from home fans at the Lamb. He also claims an “unacceptable” minority of supporters threw objects at him.

Before kick-off on Sunday (12 January), footage showed young Tamworth fans taunting Postecoglou and banging on the dug-out where the Spurs players were sat.

Former FIFA and Premier League referee Keith Hackett now believes that The FA could investigate Postecoglou’s allegations and hit Tamworth with a fine.

Objects being thrown at any occupant of the technical area, or players and match officials, present a real danger,” Hackett told Tottenham News. “Some years ago a FIFA referee was struck by a lighter that just missed his eye.

“The Football Association will now need to review and are likely to ask for the Spurs manager’s observations.

I wonder what action was taken during the game to recognise what was happening and to take the necessary steps.

One, increased security around the technical area. Two, did the fourth official see and report? Three, on the day you meet that with a public announcement. Four, is there any potential film footage?

“Sadly for Tamworth, they may be on the receiving end of a fine that will be based on any previous problems.

“It’s always difficult for the home club to deal with. It is their responsibility and security meetings will have taken place prior to the game to determine any hot spots and problem areas.”

Tamworth Police reported after the FA Cup Third Round fixture that no issues were reported at the game.
