‘FA to charge James Maddison’ after shock Tottenham vs West Ham incident – Keith Hackett

James Maddison may be sidelined with injury, but that has not stopped him speaking out about Tottenham.

Maddison ruptured his ACL for Spurs in pre-season, in what has been an injury-plagued career in North London.

Tottenham faced West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday and marched to a straightforward 3-0 victory at the London Stadium.

Now, Maddison could have landed himself in some serious trouble after the comments he made during the match.

James Maddison could face FA action after Tottenham comments

While Maddison continues his recovery from injury at Spurs, he watched events unfold at the London Stadium.

In the early stages of the game, the Lilywhites thought that they had taken the lead through Cristian Romero.

However, the referee ruled out the goal after some pushing and shoving involving Micky Van de Ven in the box.

Indeed, it was a contentious decision, and Maddison slammed Premier League referees and VAR for “an absolute shocker” of a start to the season in an X post on 13 September.

Now, ex-FIFA official Hackett has explained what action he thinks will be taken against the Englishman while speaking exclusively to Tottenham News.

I hope that we never stop players from expressing their opinion. I agree with his view that the season has not started well for match officials.

I expect Maddison to be charged. The FA are clearly monitoring comments made on social media throughout all levels of the game.”

When have the FA taken action over social media posts?

In 2024, the FA gave Nottingham Forest a fine of £750,000 for a social media post about VAR and referee bias.

The East Midlands club posted on social media after their match with Everton and complained about the number of poor decisions made.

After this, the FA charged them for implying that there was any sort of bias under FA rule E3.1.

Forest argued that the fine was inappropriate and appealed against it, although their appeal was dismissed.

Now, Maddison must wait and see if he receives a similar punishment from the FA.
