Exclusive: Tottenham ‘to block Romero-Argentina call-up’ as private talks mooted

Tottenham star Cristian Romero could be denied the opportunity to play for Argentina in March.

Ange Postecoglou hasn’t been able to call on Romero or Micky van de Ven over the past few months, with Archie Gray and Kevin Danso emerging as the preferred centre-back partnership in recent weeks.

Romero last featured for Spurs in their 4-3 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 8 December.

And it appears as though the wait for the centre-back’s return could go on, with concerns emerging over his availability for the UEFA Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar at the AFAS Stadion on Thursday (6 March).

As a result, Romero could be prevented from featuring for Argentina in the upcoming international break, although this could cause a few issues behind the scenes.

Tottenham urged to block Romero call-up for Argentina

Romero recently sparked a meltdown among Spurs supporters as he returned to training, with many suspicious of the timing of his return ahead of Argentina’s fixtures in March.

This theory was also shared via the Last Word On Spurs. However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think the defender should be allowed to feature for Argentina next month, and believes talks should be held if this is an issue.

“We’ve been hearing that Romero is going to return soon for weeks now,” Wenham said.

“When you consider that Romero and van de Ven, our two best centre-backs, have played two of the last 27 fixtures, that is obscene. These two haven’t contributed for such a significant chunk of time now.

“Therefore, I think Tottenham should be pretty steadfast in telling Argentina that Romero is not available for the March international break because he hasn’t played enough. On this occasion, we tell them no, and if there is an issue with that, it can be discussed internally with the club.”

Romero will be unhappy if Tottenham block Argentina call-up

Every Spurs supporter knows how important playing for Argentina is to Romero.

Therefore, if Tottenham block the player from travelling, that is not going to go down well. However, Spurs are well within their rights to make that decision.

Romero has hardly feature for Tottenham this season

Romero hasn’t featured for months, and even if he is passed fit, the defender should remain at Hotspur Way as he looks to rebuild his fitness, not travel halfway across the world and risk further injury.
