Everton ‘easy pickings’ for Tottenham to sign James Garner after points deduction
Everton could be “easy pickings” for Tottenham to sign James Garner this summer, according to Paul Robinson.
Spurs are reportedly considering the former Manchester United midfielder, who has also attracted interest from the likes of Newcastle this season [TEAMtalk, 18 February] after getting regular action under Sean Dyche.
Robinson believes the financial concerns that have led to profit and sustainability charges at Goodison Park could leave them open to being raided by “bigger vultures”, and if they were to be relegated it wouldmake a move for the 22-year-old all the more attractive for Tottenham.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News he said: “He’s stood out in a struggling Everton side. I think he’s played particularly well this season. But you look at the Tottenham side, you look at the way that they play, and you question where he would fit into that side.
“Whether he would be deployed as an attacking midfielder or whether he would sit, I know that he can do both, but then you look at the players that they’ve got and do you see him as an improvement to the squad?
“The Garner one could be an easy one to do due to Everton’s predicament with the FFP. Everton’s situation with the points [deduction], Everton could well be easy pickings come the end of the season for the bigger vultures.
“And deals might be more attractive to be done for their players, especially if they’re in the Championship.
“That’s definitely one to watch, but I just don’t see where he fits into this Spurs starting XI. He’s a decent player but if you’re going to that next level I’m not so sure he takes you there.”

James Garner not ready for Tottenham despite easy Goodison Park transfer
Garner looks to be on an upward trajectory for Everton since his £15million move from Old Trafford two summers ago [Sky Sports] and if he was available would not likely be short of takers.
Ange Postecoglou already has a strong set of midfield options with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr in his squad, plus James Maddison further forward.
Whether Garner would automatically push one of them onto the bench is open to debate, and assuming Everton stay in the Premier League they would surely be loath to let him go, but should they be obliged to let saleable assets leave then the opportunity might be one that Spurs won’t want to miss given the freedom to manoeuvre in the transfer market.
