England squad slammed as ‘peculiar’ Tottenham snub is questioned

John Wenham believes Gareth Southgate made a mistake leaving Tottenham midfielder James Maddison out of the England squad.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose claims Southgate’s squad is full of “bang-average defenders”.

He believes there should have been a place offered to Maddison or Jack Grealish after both men were left out of the final 26-man squad for the 2024 UEFA European Championship.

England begin their Euro 2024 campaign with a Group C clash against Serbia on Sunday (16 June).

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels the Three Lions are lacking a creative edge.

“For the first half of the season, Maddison was probably the best player in the Premier League,” Wenham said.

“I appreciate he struggled after his return from injury, and he will be the first to admit that, but I just think it is a mistake to leave him out.

“Jack Grealish too. Southgate has left out some real creative players to front-load the squad with bang-average defenders.

“It just seems a bit peculiar to me. I understand leaving one of them out, but leaving both of them out is strange.”

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison must prove Gareth Southgate wrong

Maddison must ensure he does his talking on the pitch next season.

The 27-year-old will be gutted as he watches the Euros from afar, and he must use that disappointment as fuel.

He is coming toward the peak stage of his career and therefore might not have too many more opportunities to feature at a major tournament for England.

Maddison must therefore make sure his place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup isn’t up for debate.

In other Tottenham news, Wenham has accused a Euro club of pleading poverty as a transfer saga rumbles on.
