Doctor issues update on Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon after Manchester United loan spell

We’re delighted to welcome injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the injury situation at Tottenham Hotspur...

Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon carries an injury risk with him due to a lack of minutes at Manchester United, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.

The Spanish left-back returned to the Lilywhites once the January transfer window opened due to a clause in his contract.

The 27-year-old played little over 400 league minutes and was not the first-choice option at Old Trafford.

Discussing the state of play with Reguilon exclusively with Tottenham News, Dr Brar, a doctor in physical therapy and a sports scientist, said: “Not playing in matches dents match fitness which increases injury risk and that certainly is the case with Reguilon.

Depending on the club and their needs, his minutes alone wouldn’t be the deterrence.

It still is something to keep an eye on and the club may be careful with him.

I believe him playing the full 90 minutes right away is unlikely and he could be eased into it.

The 27-year-old made just four league starts for Manchester United this season – which is less considering the injury crisis.

Despite Luke Shaw playing at centre-back, Erik ten Hag fancied playing Diogo Dalot, a right-back by trade in that position.

Ange Postecoglou may look to give the Spaniard minutes off the bench in the league as it could give Destiny Udogie a well-earned rest.

Reguilon is still to feature for Spurs since his return and there is a chance of him being in the matchday squad against Manchester United on 14 January.

In other Tottenham Hotspur news, a player is mooted to have suffered a setback in his rehabilitation and now may be out for longer than first expected.
