Djed Spence ‘to play major role in Tottenham transfer decision’

Djed Spence has turned his fortunes around at Tottenham this season, which is expected to have an impact on Spurs’ summer transfer plans.

At the beginning of the season, it looked as though Spence had no future at Tottenham, and the defender was almost sold.

However, thanks in part to a major injury crisis in North London, Spence has worked his way into the fold and made a big impact for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Therefore, it looks as though Spurs’ summer transfer plans could be set to change.

Spence ‘to prevent Tottenham transfer’

It looks as though it could be another busy summer at Hotspur Way, with several players expected to be of interest to other clubs, such as Destiny Udogie, for whom Spurs are expected to demand £60million.

Despite the interest, Tottenham want to keep hold of Udogie, and plan to sign another left-back to provide competition for the Italian [Florian Plettenberg].

However, when it comes to a new right-back, it looks as though Spence might derail any plans.

As reported by CaughtOffside (17 April), Tottenham are keen on re-signing Kyle Walker-Peters. However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – expects the emergence of Spence to block this transfer from happening.

“Walker-Peters would count as club-trained and homegrown,” Wenham said.

“Therefore, he would be incredibly appealing for that reason, as well as the fact that he is vastly experienced and came through the ranks at Tottenham.

“However, due to the emergence of Spence, I don’t see Walker-Peters being signed.”

Tottenham transfers to be impacted by Europa League

If Spurs were to win the UEFA Europa League, that would see them qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Therefore, they would be able to attract a higher profile of players and potentially convince some key stars to remain in North London.

As a result, it is difficult for Spurs to plan for the summer until they know whether they will be competing in the Champions League or not.
