Diego Simeone blasted as shock Romero-Tottenham exit news emerges
Diego Simeone might have taken his efforts to convince Tottenham defender Cristian Romero to join Atletico Madrid a step too far.
Romero’s long-term future appears to lie away from Tottenham.
It hasn’t been an easy season for the defender, who has suffered various injury issues, which led to him aiming a subtle dig at Tottenham.
Therefore, if he does move on, it is difficult to imagine that many fans would be surprised. However, based on a recent development, Romero’s potential Tottenham exit could still leave a sour taste.

Atletico Madrid want to sign Romero from Tottenham
Atletico Madrid are keen on signing Romero and could submit a big-money offer to Tottenham this summer.
However, if reports are to be believed, it seems as though Simeone isn’t waiting around until the end of the season to make some advancements on Romero’s move to the Spanish capital.
As reported by Sacha Tavolieri (31 March), Romero recently spoke to Simeone on the phone and is excited about the prospect of joining Atletico Madrid.
Tottenham | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Cristian Romero | 115 | 7 | 1 |
However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – cannot imagine that Simeone would have done something such as this.
“Where does Simeone get permission to speak to Romero?” King said.
“Apart from when Romero was away with Argentina, if Simeone was in Argentina at the same time, and I imagine he would have been for the game with Brazil, maybe they might have said hello to each other.
“However, Romero is under contract. Simeone shouldn’t be allowed to speak with him if he is talking about a possible move. He can talk to him every day of the week if he is talking to him about his family and football in general.
“However, if it is true, and I must put a question mark over that, how would that be made public when it is not legal to approach a player under contract? I couldn’t think Simeone would fall into that.”

Levy should cash in on Romero at Tottenham
If Romero did speak to Simeone, it is clear that he no longer wants to be in North London, which means he is unlikely to sign a new deal.
Therefore, with two years left on his current contract in June, Spurs need to cash in on Romero now to ensure they get back as much money as possible for a high-value asset.
