Daniel Levy to ‘look at’ Djed Spence swap deal to secure Tottenham transfer for Albert Gudmundsson
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will “look at” a potential swap deal involving Djed Spence to bring Albert Gudmundsson to North London, according to Alan Hutton.
The full-back has spent the second half of the season on loan with the Serie A side having initially made the temporary switch to Leeds United and reports suggest that Genoa would be keen to make his stay in Italy permanent [Caught Offside, 10 April].
Spurs have a strong relationship with the Italian side having negotiated a deal for Radu Dragusin in January and they reportedly are expected to show an interest in securing a move for Icelandic international Gudmundsson [Football London, 24 March].
Hutton believes the Lilywhites may well be able to use Spence in a deal to secure Gudmundsson’s signature at a cut price, but he insists that the decision on the right-back’s future will be made by Ange Postecoglou.
“It’s going to be down to the manager I would have thought,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“I think Ange Postecoglou will have a big say on it and how he sees Djed Spence’s future moving forward at the club. It’s been a difficult one for him, we’ve spoken about it many times and I do actually like him as a player.
“I’m not sure he can play in that position as an attacking full-back going into the number 10 role but the manager will know for sure. If they’re looking for somebody else in a different position and they can use him to get that deal over the line, then I’m sure that’s something they’ll look at.
“Daniel Levy is very good when it comes to those sort of deals and making things happen so I think there will be a lot on the table for them to look at and then decide what they’re going to do.”
Will Tottenham sell Djed Spence to sign Albert Gudmundsson in the summer transfer window?
While Spence has earned plaudits for his form during his loan spell in Italy, there has been little to suggest that Postecoglou is desperate to bring the Englishman back to North London at the end of the season.

When fit, Pedro Porro is the first-choice right back and that is primarily because of his ability to play in the advanced role in possession that the Australian bases his entire philosophy around. It is unclear whether Spence is capable of that.
It is clear however that a new number nine has to be on the shopping list when the transfer window opens. Gudmundsson has consistently scored goals throughout his career so far and could solve the striker problem at Spurs.
If there is a swap deal to be struck between the two sides, it could be a no-brainer for Levy and Postecoglou.
